What if you miss the deadline? If you fall behind with payments, contact your council as soon as possible. The council can take action to reclaim what you owe.
Council Tax is set and collected by your local council. A full bill is based on at least 2 adults living in a home. Discounts are not automatic – you need to apply, even if you are 'disregarded'. Your bill is usually split into 10 monthly payments.
How to do it
- Check who counts as an adult in your home. Some people are disregarded, for example full-time students and people under 18.
- In England and Wales, apply for the 25% discount if you live on your own or everyone else in your home is disregarded.
- In Scotland, ask your council about the single adult discount.
- If you are on a low income or get benefits, apply to your council for Council Tax Reduction.
- If paying is hard, ask your council to spread the bill over 12 months instead of 10.
